Son inspires mom to feed school children
Children make friends at school in the most peculiar ways, and they surprise their parents with the ridiculous things that they say. Josette Duran was amazed when her son Dylan came home from school asking for two lunches. Her initial thought was that he wasn’t getting enough to eat at school, maybe his friends had more and he just wanted to keep up with them? No, it was the total opposite. Dylan found himself feeling responsible for the boy who sat alone eating only a fruit cup for lunch.
After providing the young boy with regular wholesome lunches, Duran discovered that the boy’s mother was single and had recently lost her job. For Duran, this was something that was close to her heart as she had experienced something similar previously.
"This hits home to me because a few years ago, me and my son were homeless," Duran said. "I was living in my car and I was washing him in bathrooms. And we didn’t have food."
The mother, once she realized what was going on, arranged a meeting at the school so that she could personally thank her. Duran refused to accept any money that the mother tried to force upon her.
The whole thing spurred Duran and the volleyball team she coaches to raise money to pay off the money owed for past due accounts of lunches at the school.
"So now, nobody in that school owes any money, and now everyone can eat."
