Texas woman gives up liver donation to save a life
Texas resident Brenda Jones waited a year for a liver transplant and when it was finally her turn, she gave it up to save the life of a younger woman. Quite possibly the most selfless thing that anyone could do.
The sixty-nine-year-old woman was rushed to hospital with the understanding she would receive a new liver. Little did she know, twenty-three-year-old Abigail Flores was dying of liver failure at the same hospital. She had only one more day to live.
Ms. Jones’ new liver was a perfect match for Abigail. Of course, doctors had to ask Ms. Jones for consent before giving the organ to Abigail instead of her.
"In my heart, I wouldn't have been able to live with the liver if I had let this little girl die," Jones said. "And I still had more time ... I would have been a very selfish person."
Only a few days later, Ms. Jones received a call from the hospital. A new liver donation was ready for her.
